Why do I need to know this?
In your IELTS Speaking test, the examiner might ask you questions starting with:
- How can we…protect endangered animals?
- What can we do to…help elderly people understand technology?
- What are some ways we can…improve the air quality in cities?
In these cases, the examiner is asking you for some some advice or helpful suggestions. This is very likely if your IELTS Part 3 topics are about social problems (such as overpopulation, pollution etc.) or difficult challenges (such as raising children or protecting animals).
How do I answer these Part 3 Question Types?
Watch this short video to learn an excellent language pattern you can use to answer suggestions and advice Part 3 questions.
Here is a list of useful verbs that are followed by verb-ing (Gerunds)
- Start – “They can start learning English online.”
- Try – “You could try asking a friend for some advice.”
- Avoid – “They should avoid driving their car only short distances.”
- Think about – “Parents should think about installing some parental protection software on their computers.”
Here are some full-length Part 3 example answers:
- What can people do to improve the air quality in cities?
“First of all, people can try taking public transport more often. They could also avoid driving their car when they only have to travel short distances. On top of that, they can think about buying a more eco-friendly car or installing solar panels to reduce their carbon footprint. Those are some general ways that come to mind.”
- How can people improve their public speaking skills?
“I think the easiest way to practice is by talking in front of a mirror. By doing that, they can start getting used to speaking out loud and how they look when they speak. They could also practice in less intimidating situations, like with just their friends or family, for example. If there’s no pressure on them, they can start improving and feeling more comfortable about speaking in public.”
