Daily IELTS Answer Learning Studying Language English Band 6.5 Part 3

Daily IELTS Answers – Learning Languages (Band 6.5 – Part 3)

#1 – Why do people learn foreign languages?

I think there are lots of reasons, for example, people learn foreign languages for work – if they want to work abroad they have to learn the local language. The second is for study, for example if I’d like to study in Germany, then I’d have to learn to speak German.

#2 What foreign languages are popular in TW?

I’ll say Japanese and Korean because [recently] lots of K dramas and J dramas [have become] popular in TW, so lots of people, they want to visit these two countries so they learn these languages.

  • Grammar: Recently = Present Perfect = over a period of time
      • K dramas and J dramas [have become] popular
    • Currently = Present Simple – lots of K dramas and J dramas are popular currently

#3 – Why can some people learn languages so quickly?

I think some people have a natural talent for  learning languages, for example in Germany I had a friend he was from Canada and he could learn Germany very quickly. Another reason is that they understand the letters so they can learn it well. Based on his life experience, he travelled to Germany many times and one of the reasons is that his parents were living in Germany.

  • Collocation: have a NATURAL TALENT FOR + noun / something
    • He has a natural talent for football / painting

#4 – Is grammar important?

I think it’s important especially for some languages, for example in German or in French. Sometimes grammar has a very strong connection with logic so it’s very necessary to learn how to use grammar.

#5 – What’s the best way to learn a new language?

In my experience, the first one way is [the environment factor / immersion] so if you live in a local place and practice your language with local people every day, you can improve very quickly. The second way is by watching foreign movies or dramas because it’s very helpful to learn the new language.

  • Tip: Match the question:
    • What is the main problem with technology? =The first problem is ….
    • What is the best way to do this? = The best way is to…

The best way is immersion (n.) – ‘Immersion’ means completely surrounding yourself with another language or culture, in order to help you learn faster.
