IELTS Speaking Part 2 & 3

Part 2 & 3 – Being Late – (Jan ~ Aug. 2023)

Part 2 –

60 seconds to prepare 📝
2 minutes to answer 🗣️

  • Describe a time when you were late or missed an appointment
    You can say:
    – when it was
    – what you missed / were late for
    – why you were late
    – and say what happened as a consequence

I can recall a time when I missed an important meeting with a client due to unforeseen circumstances. The meeting was scheduled for 10 a.m. at a downtown office, and I was responsible for presenting a proposal for a new project to the client.

Unfortunately, I had been experiencing car trouble the night before, and my car wouldn’t start in the morning. I had to take a taxi to the meeting, but the traffic was heavier than usual, and the taxi got caught in a major traffic jam on the way.

Despite my best efforts to arrive on time, I ended up being almost 30 minutes late for the meeting. By the time I arrived, the client was visibly annoyed and frustrated. They had other appointments scheduled for later in the day and couldn’t afford to wait around for me.

As a consequence of my lateness, the client decided to cancel the meeting and postpone the project indefinitely. They felt that I had shown a lack of professionalism and reliability, and they were no longer interested in doing business with me or my company.

I felt extremely embarrassed and disappointed with myself for having missed such an important opportunity. I knew that I had let down not only myself but also my colleagues and the company as a whole. From that point on, I made sure to take extra precautions to avoid similar situations in the future, such as leaving earlier for appointments and having backup transportation options.
