IELTS Speaking Part 2 & 3

Part 2 & 3 – An interesting place – (Sept ~ April 2024)

Part 2 –

2 minutes to answer 🗣️

  • Describe an interesting place in your country
    You can say:
    – where it is
    – what kind of place it is
    – how you know about the place
    – and why you think it is interesting

One of the most interesting places in my country is the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. Petra is located in the southern part of the country and is renowned for its stunning rock-cut architecture and historical significance. I learned about Petra through history books and documentaries.

What makes Petra fascinating is its unique architecture and the fact that much of the city is carved into the rose-red cliffs of southern Jordan. The most famous structure in Petra is Al-Khazneh, also known as the Treasury, which is a beautifully ornate building carved into the rock face. The city also features a vast theater, temples, tombs, and intricate facades, all dating back to the Nabatean Kingdom around 300 BCE to 100 CE.

What adds to the intrigue of Petra is that it was a lost city for centuries, only rediscovered by Western explorers in the early 19th century. Its remote location and the fact that it was hidden from view by cliffs made it a place of mystery and legend. Today, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit for history enthusiasts and travelers.
