Collocations:

• the heavens open – it begins to rain very hard

• pouring down – raining very heavily

• a British thing – a social quirk or trait of British people or culture

• an icebreaker – a question or a statement used to start a conversation with another person or stranger

Adjectives:

• peppy – lively and high-spirited.
  “a peppy and energetic woman”

• optimistic – hopeful and confident about the future.

• overcast – (of the sky or weather) marked by a covering of grey cloud; dull.
  “a chilly, overcast day”

• miserable – sad, unhappy

• depressed – (of a person) in a state of unhappiness

Verbs:

• Keep an eye on – keep under careful observation.
  “dealers are keeping an eye on the currency markets”
