IELTS Vocabulary and Collocations

IELTS Question #1: What souvenirs do people buy from tourist attractions?

“Usually tourists buy goods or products that can only be found in that specific place. That can include traditional clothing, accessories, jewellery, or even pieces of artwork. Larger tourist attractions though, usually have gift shops where kids can buy toys, plushies or clothes, while adults might buy more expensive things like ornaments, crockery and jewelry. So those are some souvenirs that are common.”

Souvenirs for children:

  • Toys
  • Plushies
  • Clothes

Souvenirs for adults:

  • Ornaments
  • Crockery
  • Jewellery (BrE spelling) / Jewelry (AmE spelling)

IELTS Question #2: Is it good that the locals sell things to tourists?

“I suppose on the one hand, it’s helpful for the locals who are selling little items, food or trinkets like flowers, beads or necklaces because they can make money and take advantage of the tourism near them. But at the same time, some sellers can be very intrusive, persistent, and quite aggressive with travelers if they don’t want to buy something from them that gives the area a bad reputation and ultimately harms the tourism industry. So it is a difficult question.”

Items that locals sell:

  • Food
  • Trinkets (this means any small items, like magnets, pins, figurines and so on.)
  • Flowers
  • Beads
  • Necklaces

Adjectives that describe some sellers:

  • Intrusive – an intrusive person interrupts or stops you from doing something, they are also annoying and unwelcomed, maybe they won’t leave you alone.
  • Persistent – a persistent person doesn’t stop or quit until they get what they want, even if it bothers other people
  • Aggressive – an aggressive seller would shout loudly, demand your money, touch you or get very close to you to try and sell you something.

Verb + Noun Collocations:

  • Make money
  • Take advantage of
  • Gives smth / sme a bad reputation
  • Something can harm the tourism industry
