• Speak / Learn / Teach / Understand a language

• Switch between two different languages (English and French)

Here are some collocations regarding ‘Skills’ 

• Have proficiency in a language
• Skills can reach a high level
• Compliment someone on their language skills
• Skills can go to the next level (become very high / very good)
• You can sound natural when you speak a language (have good fluency and a clear accent)
• Skills can be good or be poor (bad)

IELTS Vocabulary and Collocations

Collocations are crucial to creating natural-sounding English. So here is an exercise where you can spot the collocations and hopefully remember them!

IELTS Question #1: Is learning a foreign language important?

“Absolutely. Especially nowadays. I think learning a foreign language is more important now than ever before. I think that’s thanks to the Internet, which allows people to connect from different corners of the world at the touch of a button. So learning another language allows you to connect with more people, understand a different culture, and get an insight into another way of looking at the world. So I think it is important to learn a foreign language.”

IELTS Question #2: When learning a foreign language, which part is easier? Speaking or writing?

“In my opinion, I think speaking is the easier part of learning a second language. I think that’s because in speaking, you don’t have to worry about spelling and sometimes you don’t have to worry about grammar. A lot of people memorize a phrase or a sentence and simply repeat it to be understood. Writing on the other hand can be quite tricky, especially if there is a different alphabet from your native language with different characters or if the spelling is very difficult, like in English. So I think speaking is the easier part.”
