Do you like to wear watches?
“I actually don’t like to wear anything on my wrists or around my neck I find it a bit uncomfortable, some people even say it’s dangerous because you have some accidents it can get caught on something. I don’t think it’s so dangerous or risky, I just find it.”
+Prepositions: on my wrist – “I wear a watch on my wrist.”
+Prepositions: around my neck – “I wear a scarf / necklace around my neck.”
Why do people like expensive watches?
“I think that’s something similar to smartphones today, I think it’s a status symbol. They were some expensive watches to show other people they can afford it – like I belong to a higher social status than you. I heard from someone that they are not actually that good at telling the time, you’re not paying for more precision – you’re just to show off.”
+Vocab: a status symbol – a cultural item representing wealth, class or superiority in some way
+Phrasal Verb: show off – to boast, brag about something
Have you ever received a watch as a gift?
“I have been given a watch. Every now and then someone gives me a watch as a gift, I only use it for a couple of weeks, then I take it off and put it in drawer or a hidden place. It’s been a problem, since I don’t like wearing things on my wrists. That said, I think it’s really nice when you don’t know what to give someone.”
+Grammar – Passive Voice: I have been given a watch
+Vocab: That said – synonym of “However / But”
