Daily IELTS Answer – TV (Band 6.5)

What types of TV shows do both young an old people watch?

“I think these days talent shows are very popular. There are other shows related to those, and it’s all about competition between ordinary people and singers. Watching the competition, people are thrilled to see the tension between the contestants. People have lots of fun cheering on the people on the show. The other popular TV show is reality shows and there are lots of different types as well. Recently, I think the shows about trips are very popular, especially foreigners travelling in Korea, can be a good idea for a TV show.”
+ Vocab: contestants – people who compete on a TV to win a prize – “Both contestants fought hard to win the cash.”
+ Ph.V:
cheering on (sep.) – support / encourage someone – “People have lots of fun cheering on the people on the show.”

What is the influence of foreign shows on the TV shows made in Korea?

“I think the biggest influence on foreign shows is from American dramas, thanks to American dramas, Korean Dramas have also changed a little bit. Before the producers knew that many people loved US drama, even though some people don’t want to watch K-Dramas because the story-lines are always too unrealistic and the plot of the story is nonsense from time to time, so I think that’s one of the reasons US drama got to popular, because they’re always talking about specific themes very well, so the scenes in the American dramas look real, but on the other hand Korea drama looks too [fictional]. But nowadays, Korean dramas, especially the courtroom or medical dramas are kind of realistic and very gritty.

+ Vocab: gritty – “Gritty American drama” – (serious + realistic)
+ Vocab: plot – the story, the events of the show – “The plot is a little bit far-fetched to be believable.”
