Daily IELTS Answer – Guests (Band 7.0 – Part 3)

Do you like to host parties in your own home?

“I like to host parties and I like being a hostess.  Even though I hate when the party finishes and I have to wash the dishes and clean everything, that’s why I don’t host a lot of parties or dinners at my home. Although I have a husband who is very friendly and has many friends because he’s a good listener, he always invites people here to have BBQ’s on the balcony, but no one helps me clean up.”
+Collocation: have BBQ’s / have parties / have dinners / have meals
+
Vocab: No one helps me clean up.
+ Vocab:I like entertaining my guests

Why do some people prefer not to entertain in their homes?

“I believe the first reason is that everybody has to clean up when people leave. There are a lot of tasks, things to do, like washing dishes. Secondly, there are people who don’t like to make new friends and to get to know their friends, and they don’t like to socialise or they don’t have much social energy and people who don’t care friends. Whereas, here in Brazil, most people love to socialise. it’s the preferred way to spend the weekend, they prefer to go out and see friends, or host some friends or family, and I love to my parents’ house on Sundays because they always have lunch and I love to socialise with my family and catch up with my relatives.”
+Grammar Check: People who don’t – They don’t

In Brazil, when people visit each others homes, do they usually bring a gift?

“It depends on the occasion. If you don’t know a person very well, this person might bring flowers or wine, or some kind of home gifts. Even though this person might be a close friend, it’s not common to receive a gift that often. For example, my husband and I are friends with another couple with a small girl the same age as my son, and they always come over and socialise, we have a BBQ on the balcony, and they are at our house all the time, but we don’t receive any presents. We are close friends, so we don’t need to give a gift or anything, because they’re like our family. But when this person isn’t so close to us, we always receive some kind of gift.”
+Vocab: home gifts – small, simple gifts – for example, candles, picture frames, and glassware.
+Grammar: some kind of gift.

How will you entertain your guests at your home?

“We usually play some music, have a dinner or have a BBQ on the balcony. Most of our friends have kids also, so we bring some toys to the living room and the living room is full of toys, papers, crayons, colours, pencils and in the end, everything is a mess because there are so many children and people that don’t clean up anything. But I love to entertain my friends, even though it’s not easy when the party finishes.”
