Daily IELTS Answer – Elderly People (Band 7.0 – Part 3)

IELTS example answer old people Part 3 sample example 2019

Daily IELTS Answer: Elderly People (Band 7.0 – Part 3)

1. What kinds of activities to older people like to do in HK?

I think the elderly in Hong Kong love to go hiking because every time I go hiking I see many old people. I think the reasons they love hiking is because they can [get fitter / be healthier] and it’s a cheap activity so I think most of the elderly in Hong Kong love to go hiking to get some fresh air.

  • Collocation: get fitter = makes you fitter / makes you stronger
    • be healthier

2. Why do young people like to ask older people about the past?

I believe that teenagers are curious about the past and what the elderly did.. Teenagers or young people may gain knowledge about what the elderly did in the past, they may get some advice and learn from their experience. For example, when I am cooking, I ask my mum how much sugar I need to put because I think she has many years OF cooking experience. And she knows how much will be perfect (a secret recipe) so I think young people respect the elderly’s experience and so they are always asking about the past of the old people.

  • Grammar: Sugar is uncountable, so we say how much sugara lot of sugar / some sugar
  • Collocation: gain knowledge
  • Collocation: You can get some advice
  • Vocab: (a secret recipe) – every mother has (a secret recipe)

3. Do you think old people enjoy their life more nowadays than old people did in the past?

It’s a difficult question because I’m not exactly sure about it. But I think nowadays the elderly’s retired life is quite comfortable. For example my grandma, she’s 75 years old and goes shopping and meets her friends or does exercise every day and the government has subsidies for their daily lives, especially for medicine, so I think nowadays their welfare is much better than in the past.

  • Phrase: I‘m not exactly sure (adj.) about
  • Phrase: I don’t exactly know (v.) about…
  • Collocation: They have comfortable life
  • Vocab: subsidies (n.) – a sum of money granted by the state

In Hong Kong, do young people like to live with older people?

Well, I think that not many teenagers like living with their parents even grandparents because the living spaces (pl.n) are small in Hong Kong, we all live in a flat so if too many people live together in a small space (n.) then I think they will have lots of conflicts, and also the young people think the elderly will restrict their behaviour. For example, they want to stay out late, maybe in a friend’s home, but maybe their parents will say “no”, so as young people love freedom, I think most of them are not very happy to live with the elderly.

  • Vocab: the living SPACES (rooms / apartments / flats)
  • Vocab / Phrase: stay out late – go out and socialise until late at night
  • Collocation: Restrict someone’s behaviour = stop them from doing something
