Are families getting bigger or smaller in Thailand?

“I believe they are getting smaller and smaller nowadays, the reason is because, in the past, parents preferred to have many children because they thought that it would be good for them to have kids to take care of them in the future. Also, at that time, there were a lot of wars and diseases, so unfortunately some children would pass away when they were young. People nowadays, however, prefer to have smaller families, because they don’t want to take responsibility for their children and just enjoy themselves.”

+Vocab: [The mortality rate] was much higher than nowadays, due to war, disease of lack of medicine.
+Collocation: take responsibility – “They don’t want to take responsibility for their children.”

Do you think that big cities are getting too crowded nowadays?

“Yes I think so, definitely, I think big cities are getting too crowded. So, take Bangkok, as an example, the city is growing very fast and there are many new apartments, offices and entertainment (n.) areas like shops or bars. I think that’s because there are always more job opportunities in the capital cities. So many people from rural areas move to the inner city, and the city gets more crowded [as a consequence]. If Bangkok were less crowded than today, I think Bangkok would be a lot better.“

+Grammar: 2nd conditional – “So if Bangkok were less crowded than today, I think Bangkok would be a lot better.”
